About Mohammad Delasa
In my mind, every pattern in carpet design tells a unique story, and When these patterns are combined with the laws of mathematics and the art intuition, they reflect the mind, identity, and beliefs of their creator. Carpets, in my tradition and culture—where I was born—have always been cherished and passed down as valuable heritage to future generations wherever they are found, from the grand halls of Persian kings to the tents of small nomadic tribes. In my tradition, a carpet is the first possession a young couple acquires before marriage, a symbol on which the foundations of family life are built.
For me, whose greatest childhood joy was painting with watercolor and oil paint, there was no goal other than attending university in an art-related field. In 1998, I entered Saba Faculty of Art and Architecture to study carpet design, where I benefited from the knowledge and perspective of highly skilled professors. When I was a freshman, and I had a very little understanding of carpet design, I created a modern design inspired by forgotten motifs from the Bakhtiari tribe, which was purchased and woven by one of the largest carpet manufacturers. This experience was so inspiring that by the end of my studies, I had traditionally designed more than 385 modern and classic patterns, all by hand with brush on paper, each of which was purchased and woven by carpet manufacturers.
Alongside my academic studies of classic Persian carpet designs, I developed an interest in the modern European art movements that emerged in the early 20th century, where art began to move away from the traditional focus on balance and symmetry, creating modern styles in painting and architecture. As a result, I was always striving to create a meaningful connection between classic and modern designs— “a bridge between the authenticity of classic designs and the appeal of modern ones.” The outcome of my relentless efforts was the creation of a unique style of aging classic designs, offering the timeless quality of these designs combined with the allure of modern styles.
After graduating, I collaborated with various companies in the field of handwoven, silk handwoven, machine-made carpets, and upholstery fabrics. Over 90 of the designs that I created during this one-year were woven and produced by carpet manufacturers in Iran, Turkey, Uzbekistan, the United States, Canada, and China.
In 2014, I established Delasa Design Studio in Istanbul, gaining valuable experience by working with major carpet producers worldwide. Today, Delasa Studio is a place where new design concepts, techniques, colors, and raw materials for the carpet industry are developed in a systematic process. It is where we work closely with our clients to understand their vision and exceed their needs by creating a unique, customized style for each customer.
Fifteen years have passed since my journey in the world of carpet design began. My mind never gets tired of studying new cultures, artistic styles, and patterns, and my constant effort to combine these styles is the reason my designs have endured and become timeless.
